Fringe

I'll get this outta the way right off - it may be a while until another LOST comes arond, a show that generated So much discussion and involvement. That's one of the things I miss the most about Lost. while it is fun to talk about other shows, usually there's only so much to talk about. To keep a discussion going, there simply needs to be more to talk about. LOST had all the elements to keep it going, with the top thre I would put as the mystery and intrigue, the characters and their relationships, and popularity.

I'm wondering if Fringe may be getting closer to these things - enough mystery to speculate and have crackpot theories at least. Plus, there are a few podcasts out there. I just noticed tha Jay and Jack just started covering Fringe in their LOST podcast. That may not be a reliable indicator as perhaps some podcasters would like to be the first one there in case it does take off.

So while I haven't even seen most of the Fringe episodes and ai didn't realize it was already in Season 4, this season has some pretty interesting things happening, and questions are being raised that aren't being answered right away.

I caught the last few sodes from last season at the end of the summer, so I think I have the basic gist of the deal with the alternate universe, and Peter. He prevents Universe 2 from wiping out "Our" universe by getting innthe machine. But that throws him into the future, then he poofs out of existence. I actually can't remeber now what lead up to the poof, if he made it back to the present. But according to the pasty man with the hat (MIH - man n hat?), he erased Peter as he was no longer needed.

Was this the first we saw of MIH? He knows what's going on and has some control - but I didn't get the impression that he's from universe 2. He may not be human. so the current reality is one where he never existed, even though he was from the other universe. It was mentioned that the entire timeline was changed. But if theyre going with alternate universes, then this current one actually should be an alternate as well.

So what else has changed in this timeline? Walter was asking about his wife, I got the feeling that was different. And if Peter wasn't around, how did it come to be that they got Walter out of the institution to come work for Fringe division. This was season one stuff, but I can't remember how it all went down. It may have been the same if Peter wasn't there and opposing the idea. But now, with the help of Subject 9, Pete has proofed back into existence, and no one knows him, or remembers him. But you can't remember something that didn't happen. The writers are probably going with the changed timeline scenario, where when the past changes, it erases certain memories of certain people in the present. If that's how it's going to be, I'm hoping for more explanation. But I liked the way that they handled it in LOST, where Whatever Happened, Happened. And if something did get changed in the past, the universe course corrected and the end result was the same.

I'm just glad to have Peter back on the show and I'm eager to see how He helps to get everything back to the way it should be.  It's so fun to be simply a casual watcher of the show.

I keep forgetting to watch this show, but I'm only a week behind now, thanks to Hulu's stupid 8-day delay...

 

But anyway, I do miss the community interaction that sprung up around Lost. I'm not sure if we'll find that again. 

 

Fringe is pretty dense and interesting. The hat men (or the Observers) have popped up a lot. We don't know their origins and they seem to play in both universes, or at least have a vested interest in both of them. I would love to know more!

That's the second time in as many days now I've heard about this 8 day delay. I just downloaded the NBC app, and it's mentioned in there, andnZi think they own Hulu?

The Observers, thank you. They monitor things and seem to only intervene when they have to, when it's necessary to preserve balance. Maybe they're supposed to be angels, or something similar. They didn't poof away Peter until after he prevented the machine from working - that was going to destroy this inverse. So, the motive for using the machine, wasn't it all basically born from having their version of Peter stolen?

So, if the observers erased him, then they basically did the course correcting, where Peter dies in both universes. Does our Walter remember having a son who died?

They signed some silly deal with Dish Network, so if you're a Dish Network subscriber, you can see Fox still without the 8-day delay. House has been this way for a long time. I don't have a DVR, so I'm at the mercy of the interwebs when I forget to watch Fringe. 

 

Did you see the Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon that came out earlier this year? His handlers remind me of the observers. If you haven't see this movie, I would say go for it. It's really good. 


Walter did remember Peter dying. In that episode with the mold, he was telling the little boy about Peter. He died and then the one he snatched from the other universe died in the ice, because the Observer did not step in to save him.

 

Am I confused? Yes! But I love it!

I remeber that now, with the mold boy. But I thought Walter meant the HE wasn't able to save Peter. I don't retain details very weel, so even though I did see the Adjystment Bureau, I still couldn't tell someone what it was about!

Do you have any sort of On Demand with whatever service you have? I have Comast/Xfinity and the episodes come out there the next day, or not long after. But then you only get the 3 or 4 most recent episodes.

I have an old ATI USB TV Tuner box that I no longer use. I would be glad to ship to to you. You'd have to be ready for a certain amount of configuration - but if you can get it working it would use your computer as a DVR. The only time it's actually worked well for me was on Windiws XP - I just ran the connected a cable TV cable (or Antenna), downloaded the program guide and it played and recorded on the computer.

Let me know, it's just sitting in a box with other old gadgets that aren't worth the trouble of trying to sell.

That sounds neat! I do have an old XP computer I could use. That would be fun. Let me...and I can cover the postage.

My on demand is awful. I moved from Comcast country where I had great on Demand and now I have Charter. They went bankrupt this year, so they're not putting a lot of money into upgrades. I only have NBC and ABC on demand now.

Oh my, I don't know what I'd do with only two On-Demand channels! I've boomed around with different services and finally settled with Comcast. They've even added more and more content over the last couple years. Enough to where I don't even need the DVR as much.

I'll cover the shipping, it won't be much. Send a PM with the info and I'll package it up and get to the post office as soon as I can.

You'll need to run a cable to it, so you may need a splitter if there's not already a cable there. I'f I still have the original software CD I'll send that too. It has the program for the TV listings and where you set it to record. There is a newer version if it's still available on their website. Also, technically it's supposed to work with Windows Media Center or other programs that utilize a TV tuner or capture card.

Just thought I'd check in and see how us Fringe fans are enjoying the story as it unfolds.

I'm liking it, but I'm wondering how far they're taking the parallel universe theme. I'm not sure if there is supposed to be a third universe where Peter is trying to return to, or, if it's simply the original universe with a rewritten timeline.

Also, I can't remember the original details about how Peter was saved as a boy. I think that he dies in universe 1, then Walter went and got him from universe 2 after figuring out how to cure him, but was unable to take him back. Is that correct?

You are correct, but it wasn't that Walter was unable to take him back as much as his wife was unwilling to lose him again.

I do to some extent, as you can see I'm confused about some things but mostly because I don't remember certain details that well. Do you think there is just too much clutter, with Observers,mshape shifters, timelines and all that, or is it something else that you find disappointing?
