My whole life I have struggled with maintaining a healthy weight. At my day job, I alternate between working at a desk to standing and walking between labs. My job is pretty stressful because I work as a contractor and recently our client has been very unreasonable. At night, I come home to care for my dogs and miniature horses. I would have thought that cleaning 10 kennel runs and exercising dogs would have helped me be fit but no such luck. I try to take 30 minutes a day and walk. I try to maintain a healthy diet but have not had luck losing weight. My cholesterol, blood pressure and over all health is good so my doctors are not concerned about my weight. I have recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia which the doctor thinks may be due to my inability to sleep more the 5-6 hours a night. The medication I was out on caused me to gain weight. I discontinued the medication because it also made my brain very foggy. I have turned to meditation and relaxation and have started to see success!
My husband and I have decided to try the Atkins diet because it is the easiest for us. I have had luck with it in the past. My current goal is to lose weight and try to move the negative stress from my life (or at least not let the things I control bother me.)
Thanks for letting me share!
Sandy

Permalink Reply by Fred Firestine on January 23, 2011 at 10:12pm Hi Sandy! I think a lot of us share your struggle with a busy work life, then taking care of everything at home. I thought I had it bad with three cats and two dogs! :-) It's good that you are finding ways to manage your health problems. I also need to work on getting more sleep. Do you think stretching routines would also help your condition?
After I heard this guy on a podcast recently, I have been recommending http://www.livinlavidalowcarb.com/ to people who are interested in low-carb diets. Jimmy Moore is a podcaster and blogger who has lost a lot of weight by embracing this concept, and he shares a lot of good information. I am not a low-carb person, but I do see some convincing arguments about it, especially if a person's metabolism is sensitive to carbs or a lot of the foods that contain them.
Permalink Reply by Sandy Allen on January 25, 2011 at 6:37am So far so good; at least for the diet changes. Day 4 of Atkins and I woke up without a headache or foggy head! After today, I will remove a large stressor that has been bothering me. I haven't been doing so well on my "meditation." I need to find 20 minutes for me.
Thanks for the encouragement,
Sandy

Permalink Reply by Sandy Allen on February 5, 2011 at 7:03am Well I crashed on Atkins. The headaches came back in a really bad way! I'm still low carb; just not as severe as what Atkins requires. I', not seeing the weight loss I hoped for. I have been walking for an hour in the morning. I scheduled an appointment with a nutritionist in early March. She is with a holistic practice and will meet with me twice a week for 6 months to help guide me down a healthier path.
On another note, I'm looking for fun exercise programs. I have a wii and would love to hear what workout games are your favorites!
Thanks,
Sandy
Permalink Reply by Fred Firestine on February 5, 2011 at 7:40am Hi Sandy! Sorry to hear about your troubles with Atkins, but it's good that you are making adjustments and forging ahead. Did you check out that low carb website (in my previous message)? Again, I'm not saying it's for everyone, but it might help. Remember, too, that it's possible to add carbs to a certain level where your body can function comfortably and still be lower in carbs than a "standard" diet.
A nutritionist is a great idea. If you can put together a meal plan that can help you stay on track, you will feel better and see some good results.
I have heard the new Jillian Michaels Wii game for 2011 has some standard workout elements as well as a game mode, where you have to accomplish tasks or something in order to proceed. That might be interesting. We have the Wii Fit Plus software, as well as the original Wii Fit, and that's all I think. There is a variety of exercises and games that come with those.

I have been using the website you recommended. There are some great recipes on the forum. Thanks for the site!
I have the Wii fit plus and EA sports active but I get bored quickly. So far the best I have used is the Dance games in workout mode. The new Jillian game sounds good! I'll have to look into it. the people I work with are doing Insanity, P90X and Hip-hop Abs but those are way too intense for me.

Permalink Reply by Fred Firestine on February 5, 2011 at 9:20am Insanity might be exactly that (insane) for you at this point, but I know some people have had good weight loss results with P90X. God bless them, because it's hard enough for a scrawny weakling like me. :-) You can always modify the exercises and repetitions to fit your ability level. There is also Tony's earlier program, called Power 90, if you want to look into that. I think it's funny that a friend of mine, who is a Turbo Fire instructor (another Beachbody program) thinks that P90X is too scary for her. We all have our preferences, I guess.

I am SOOOO DELIGHTED to hear that you're walking regularly and that you'll be seeking advice from a nutrionist. I don't have any experience with the Atkins plan. However, I think getting some solid advice from someone like a nutrionist is the way to go.
I don't know of many "fun" exercise programs. :) Though, I hear some people really dig that thing they call "Spinning". ;)
