I have to admit I have been trying to write this for awhile, but have always put it off.  I have decided that I need to get in shape.  What triggered this was a trip back home to visit my family.  My sister, Robin and her husband, my nephew Brent and several other family members were planning a hike across the Grand Canyon ( in fact as I write this they are slogging their way across it).  She invite me to join them and I had to say no, because I knew there was no way I could do it.  I am tired of having to think about how big I am and if I am physically able to do something.  I hate sitting in a chair with arms and feeling like I've been poured into it.  I have about 6-7 dress sizes to lose and I started on that journey last week.  Right now my plan is to go for a walk at least five days a week.  Last week I walked 1.5 miles on Monday-Thursday, on Thursday I realized this was a mistake, when I could barely move.  This week I made a change I am still walking 1.5 miles, but did it on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, skipped Wednesday and then walk again Thursday and Friday. I do it as soon as I get up in the morning, because I know if I wait I'll start making excuses.  Right now the 1.5 miles is taking between 35 and 40 minutes.  My goal is too reach 3 miles  5x a week, but I plan to build up slowly.  I have started to use Run Keeper to keep track of my progress.  I am also using Tap and Track to keep track of my calories.  Which to me is the hardest thing to do, because I make my own recipes, so counting calories can be hard, I am trying to be as honest I can about it.  Anyway my adventure has just started and it is a long one and I expect to have a few detours.  Any encouragement will be appreciated

It is a super pedometer, you wear it on your waist all day and it keeps track of of how many miles you walk, run or ride a bike and how many calories you burn.  You can also log in the food you eat at the Web site

Congrats on getting back to it.  I've been working on getting back to it myself.  However, I'm taking a bit of a different approach for my own personal accountability this time around.

I did get a treadmill that I put in my garage.  Trying to remove as many excuses as I can from myself

Yeah, i saw a couple of picture of the treadmill and you sweating on it.  Now you have no excuse for not doing some daily exercise.   I am trying to do my daily walk as soon as I get up in the am, before I do anything else.  I find if I don't do it early, I usually don't

Cool, I have  FITBIT.   Partner with me because I need to get back on that horse myself.  Hurt my back doing a 10K and shut down myself.

Ok  last week was not a good week, I didn't fall off the exercise wagon, but I was sitting on the edge with my feet hanging off.  I have been trying to walk 5 times a week at least 2-3 miles day or exercising at the gym for about 40 minutes.  Last week I only walked 3 times last week,  although I did a mile one day walking to the store.  I kept making excuses, too hot, too wet, too tired.... I think the hardest part for me is getting out the door, once I am out I usually do fine.  I was wondering how others motivate themselves to keep going.

Does  anyone listen to the Jillian Michaels Podcast,  I enjoy it very much.  Her most recent episode was called "   "What are the Enemies of Being Great,  well worth listening too even if you aren't dealing with a weight issues, some good life lessons.

I used to listen to Jillian's podcast all the time.  Don't know how or why I dropped the show a while ago.

I'm going to add it back now and queue up this episode.

Thanks Kim!

I listened to Jillian's former radio show in podcast form, and I was so excited when she came back to that format as a "real" podcast. She also has a related YouTube show called "Daily Dose with Jillian Michaels," which is part of the EverydayHealth channel on YouTube. You can see Jillian and Janice doing their thing, and see some extra content.

Kim, regarding your excuses about exercise, have you considered if any of these activities are what you like to do? I was a runner in high school, which was great when it was after school or during daylight hours in general, but I realized when I was in college that I don't like running if it means getting up early to go out in the cold and dark. Eventually, I got a treadmill, but for a long time I didn't do much exercise at all.

If you find an activity you would do just for fun, then the exercise part is an added bonus. Some people like dancing, for example. If you walk with a friend, it might be more fun than walking alone. Even just challenging a friend to exercise at the same time as you do every day (maybe not together) might motivate both of you. There could be some money involved. I am not above gambling if it leads to better health.  ;-)

I like listening to Jillian Michaels.  She is a beast.  She has a lot of good advice.  I am about to post my opinion of the body revolution on my thread.

I decided to start a blog, where I post my almost daily thoughts  mostly about exercise, sleep and eating.  Have to admit I was inspired to do it by #PABL and a blog I read daily called  A Fat Man's Journey, it is a daily journey of a man who has lost over a 100 pounds since 12/27/2011 and his struggles and triumphs.  My blog is Walk with Me.

That is awesome Kim.  I hope that your new blog inspires others to join you on the journey!

Congrats!
