I have been struggling with my weight for several years now. I am 75 lbs over weight, 47 married empty nester, accountant for a non-profit. Recently I have committed to doing a 1/2 marathon in November. 12 weeks (EEKK). My mom & sister will be joining me. My mother has been running since her 40's. She ran her first marathon the year I made her a grandmother :). Anyway this will be my 4th 1/2 marathon since 2004, I walked the first 3. I have decided I am going to run at least a 1/3 of this one. I started using a Jeff Galloway Iphone AP for interval training about 5 weeks ago. I have been very extremely careful because I don't want to injure myself and not be able to do it at all. I originally started with 1 minute running 2 minute walking with the running at 6mph. However carrying so much extra weight I could feel my right leg was not liking it very much, this is when I decided that the tortoise is the one who finishes the race and I backed down to 4.5 mph and running 30 seconds walking 45 seconds. I have since upped it to 5mph and am really feeling good about it. I am running 5 days a week, and today I am going to do my first long run of 5 miles, I have been doing a daily run of 2.5 which I upped to 3.5 on Tuesday this week. I am really starting to feel strong and its not as much of a mental battle today as it was 5 weeks ago.
Also in regard to my diet. My husband and I live in the Houston Texas area and there is a local trainer who stared a company called My Fit Foods. They prepare fresh food for you that you can pick up a couple times a week, so it is very much the easy way, no food prep or too much though required.. Its gluten free and comes in 3 serving sizes and all I have to do is grab my meals in the morning on my way out the door. I started logging my food today on Lose it and yesterday I ordered the Fit Bit (wish I had it already).
I am in prayer that I will be successful this time, because there have been so many times in the past I have failed. My motto this time "Do or Do Not - There is no try" Yoda! I will DO!!
My short term goal is to lose at least 15lbs by the race.
My long term is to lose the 75 lbs and to continue running an hour a day 5 days a week.
Thank you in advance for encouragement & support thru my journey! I need all the help I can get.
Also I would love to hear how the fit bit has helped anyone already!
Be Blessed
Dawn

Permalink Reply by Dawn McSwain on August 8, 2012 at 5:00pm OK here is whats going on with my weight loss journey. I have been taking a vacation for reality lol. Not really but I have not been good, for a few reasons. My birthday was one but is now long gone. My review of the Jillian Michael's Body Revolution is in pieces.
1) the Exercise for someone as out of shape as I am is pretty tough, but since I am pretty exercise savvy I have managed not to injure myself. Not true of another family member who needs some one on one coaching since she is very large and not very savvy when it come to exercise. She has hurt herself with this program and will not be able to do anything for awhile since it was a back injury. The exercise is very effective and I do enjoy it and have become much stronger. I think she advances you too fast, again I am talking about people who are obese.
2) The food (Diet portion) of the program is not really doable for the average person in my opinion. The 1st week (7 day kick start) is awesome and very doable, I loved the food and wasn't bogged down with cooking, shopping or math. The rest of the 90 days is very complicated and I personally didn't care for many of the dishes. Not only did the recipes require lots of ingredients, and buying way too many condiments. but the serving sizes were for families, and if your only cooking for 1 or 2 it makes it even more expensive or complicated to reduce the serving sizes. I found one recipe where the calorie count was obviously way too low, so it had to be a typo in the book.
So the end result is I have not been keeping up with the food portion but still going forward with the exercise. I am also doing water aerobics a few times a week. But honestly I need to reboot my eating habits so I can actually lose weight while i do it. I am currently looking into some other diets to compliment my exercise.
Permalink Reply by Fred Firestine on August 25, 2012 at 6:27pm Hi Dawn! Thanks for the update. I'm sorry I haven't been back here sooner to see it. I finished my "trial run" with Body Revolution at the end of July. It's good to see the exercises are tough but not too tough for you. My experience with DVD workouts is that the first time is for practice (maybe even the first week), then you enter the phase where it's a challenge, and maybe you can't do it all, and eventually you get pretty good at it.
As for the food part, I have seen recommended meal plans for several DVD workout programs, and I don't use them. As you said, the portion sizes might be wrong, or the list of ingredients too long. I have my favorite healthy things to eat, and I track my calories. I have been working on adjusting my amount of protein, fat and carbs, but besides that I don't follow any plan.

I agree with you on Jillian and diet, I use her for inspiration only when it comes to diet. Have you tried the app Loseit, it helps you keep track of what you eat. I find when I write things down I am more aware of what I eat. Also sometimes I find that something i think is low cal isn't or all the calories something has is fat calories.
