Hello guys,
I have a series of questions that I hope is not overwhelming or posted in the wrong place. If so, please let me know!
Here she goes:
How to make commercials
What resources do you guys suggest for putting together commercials? I've heard when the host does the commercial it gets a better response.
Earbuds vs headsets
I'm wondering about wearing ipod style earbuds vs wearing an over the head, headset. I've got pretty bad TMJ and having those on, sometimes gives me headaches and the ear buds don't. Is this possible or something not recommended?
Sitting mic instead of having a mic arm
Is there a difference between having a sitting microphone on your desk vs having an arm that swings?
What phone service to use
What phone service is recommended for doing interviews? I have skype but should I also get a real land line?
Will skype work for all interviews?
Wondering if Skype will work or if I need a land line also?
RSS length for shows with transcription
I've noticed Pat Flynn has his shows transcribed but in PDF format. Is this because of the RSS length issue for which he created that plugin? I'd like to eventually have my shows transcribed below my show notes. If I do this, will this affect my RSS feed?
Adding ability to copy embed code for shows to play on other sites
I've seen on some sites where you can actually copy the embed code (for the player and show) so a visitor can actually put the show and player on their website. Is this advisable? Seems good to help spread the show but also bad in terms of bandwith.
Wondering your thoughts!
Thanks guys,
Justin

These sort of questions are more appropriate for Podcast Answer Man, which is the one place where I have devoted to answer questions like these for free.
Since answering questions like these is what I do for a living, I prefer to have this community to talk about anything but answering such questions. I hope you can understand.
I am about to launch a "Podcaster's Mastermind" group which is going to be a paid membership where folks can post questions like these and likely get answers from other experienced podcasters. I'll be announcing this within the next week or so.
Quickly, I'll respond to to a few of the above..
1) Commercials - I have no way to "quickly" answer this question.
2) Earbuds are just fine.
3) Mic arm makes it easier to bring the mic to you, making it easier for you to keep consistent audio levels. If you go with a table top mount, you are going to either have to lean into the mic or gain it higher, picking up more background noise.
4) Skype can work for all interviews. But soooooooooo much more can be said about this.
5) Phone service... I could go on for at least two hours on this topic. In fact, it's likely going to be my next video training tutorial.
6) RSS Feed - It can affect the size of your rss feed. There are some options like attaching a pdf or txt doc that folks could like on or download
7) Others embedding your shows would actually increase the amount of bandwidth you use. Though, there are so many options for flat fee for unlimited bandwidth that you don't need to worry about that.
I have not researched an option for a player where folks have the option of embedding your audio podcast. There are plenty of video players that allow you to offer that.
If you ever want to submit questions for Podcast Answer Man, my hotline number is 859-795-4067.
I hope this helps just a little.

Permalink Reply by Cliff Ravenscraft on January 11, 2012 at 8:23am Jared, my problem is that if you post a question about podcasting on this site, it is DARN NEAR IMPOSSIBLE for me to "not answer it."
This is why I had to remove my podcasting group from the site and record the following podcast episode...

I am sooooo thankful that you understand. It's hard for me to write, in this community, that I prefer that podcasting questions not be posted here.

Cliff answered most of your questions but I wanted to elaborate on one in particular. Your question concerning the table top mic stand vs. the mic arm is the one. I wanted to add that if you go with a table top mic stand you often get a thud when you put your elbow on the desk or put your hand up there. With the mic arm those problems are eliminated especially if you opt for the shockmount as well. You can use a table top mic stand with a shockmount as well which would eliminate the issue I am talking about.

Awesome timing! I'm just heading out now to get a couple new mic stands. We recorded our first episode sitting on our couch with the arm mic stands and 2 sm57 mics with windshields and it sounded OK. But thinking sitting at kitchen table may be better so I'll look for some table stands with shock mounts. Then at least we'll have options. Not sure they'll have what I want at our local Guitar Center but we'll see. Thanks a million for the tips though!
